David Heatley

Last few months, I had the opportunity work on a funny graphic memoir by David Heatley. David’s My Brain is Hanging Upside Down shakes loose every awkward, life changing, and erotic moment from his past and graphically ups the ante by recreating those moments in vivid detail. The details chronicle his sexual encounters, his experiences with black people to the birth of his children. As you read his adventures, you will cringe, sigh and laugh. His deeply personal art reflects the universal stories in that occur in our lives. Funny thing is when you meet David you discover that he is little shy, quite sarcastic and passionate about all forms of storytelling. I have now reread My Brain is Hanging Upside Down twice and I am still laughing. If you want to see and read more about him you can go his website: www.drawger.com/heatley and see what else shakes loose.

Fun Fact: David created a Dad toy in the honor of his father and I am hoping for a Production Peggy toy. It would be so cool...

Ode to the Causal Fan

In the era where the comic books compete with the traditional novel and non-fiction prose, the graphic novel is giving its mainstream cousins a run for its money. Gone are the days where the word "comics" inspired only images of Superman, the Fantastic Four, or The Peanuts. Now the word can bring to mind such titles as Rex Mundi, The Victorian, Cancer Vixen, and Soon I Will I Will Be Invincible.

What inspires me about comics these days is its diversity. I have had off and on relationship with comics and graphic novels, but I am fan none the less. There’s so much to learn and read in the comic book world. Fortunately, I have some friends who have been long time comic collectors, and the privilege of working for Pantheon Books. So I am going to share my experiences and my reads. Feel free to ask questions and welcome to my world.
